X-CAPE
24 March - 02 May 2007
Cape Town, South Africa
X-CAPE is a programme of activities by artists and cultural practitioners from across Cape Town and South Africa to coincide with the CAPE 07 art event from 24 March - 02 May, 2007.
It showcases over 280 artists in 90 venues across the Cape Town Unicity. Venues include galleries, museums, public spaces, restaurants, bars, studios, community centres and websites. The programme has 86 visual art exhibitions, 50 films, 15 new media/multimedia works, 5 workshops, 25 performances/plays and 30 collectives participating.
X-CAPE is artist-led: there are no individuals or curators defining its barriers or borders and no single cultural or artistic point of view is privileged.
For 5 weeks, its participants extend an open invitation to all those curious to seek out the established and undiscovered across the city.
In addition, the X-CAPE Opening Social on Wednesday 28 March and the 3 recommended Open Day Circuits offer visitors a chance to meet the artists, network, socialise and have a good time.
Take a look at the programme, use the maps to locate where you're headed and then be prepared to be surprised, engaged and challenged.
X- CAPE was initiated by the CAPE Africa Platform (CAPE) and is coordinated in partnership with VANSA (Visual Arts Network of South Africa).
The partnership with VANSA was based on the number of key aims and objectives CAPE shares with VANSA, including a mandate to broaden the parameters of visual arts and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and to constructively address the historical imbalances (in terms of access and opportunity) that continue to characterise the arts sector.
CAPE and VANSA are not responsible for X-CAPE content and despite our best efforts there may be errors and/ or alterations to the listed schedules of events. Please contact the individual event organisers and venues (listed in this guide) for updates and additional information.
Visitors attend X-CAPE events, performances and exhibitions at their own risk. CAPE and VANSA are not responsible for any security or transport during the X-CAPE programme.
The project is supported by Business Arts South Africa (BASA), Department of Economic Development and Tourism, Visual Arts Network of South Africa (VANSA) and the SA Art Times.
